Indonesia is preparing for its sixth modern census of population which will be held in 2010. The previous population censuses were held in 1961, 1971, 1980, 1990 and 2000. As in the previous censuses during the next census Indonesia will use the usual residence concept of the population, except for those who do not have permanent residence. In this usual residence concept a person is considered as a population of Indonesia if that person usualy lives in a specified area of Indonesia.
According to the 2000 Population Census the population of Indonesia was 205.1 millions people in June 2000; out of these 121 millions or about 60 percent live on the island of Java, the most densely populated island in Indonesia. Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world in terms of their population following China, India and the United States. Based on this census the population density of Indonesia in 2000 was 103 people per square kilometer.
